AI Readiness: Five Questions Before You Buy

The fastest way to waste an AI budget is to buy before you're ready. The demo looks great, the pitch is compelling, and the contract gets signed. Six months later, the project is stuck on problems that had nothing to do with the AI. An honest AI readiness check takes a week and can save a year.

Here are the five questions to answer before you buy anything.

1. What problem are you solving, and how will you measure it?

Name a specific outcome. Reduce repeat contacts on a set of reasons, cut after-call work, improve resolution on a journey. Then capture today's baseline. If you can't name the metric, you can't prove the value, and the project will drift.

2. Is your knowledge ready?

Every AI tool in the contact center runs on what your company has written down. If your top articles are outdated or contradictory, AI will deliver wrong answers faster. Audit the content behind your highest-volume contact reasons before anything else.

Most AI readiness problems aren't AI problems. They're knowledge, data, and ownership problems wearing an AI costume.

3. Can your systems share context?

AI needs customer data to be useful. Can it identify the customer, see their history, and take action in your systems? If integration is weak, the AI will be smart and useless at the same time.

4. Who owns it after launch?

AI is not a project you finish. It needs ongoing tuning, knowledge updates, conversation review, and performance management. Name the operational owner before you sign, and make sure they have the time and budget to run it.

5. How will you bring your people along?

Agents, supervisors, and back-office teams will feel the change first. Plan how you'll involve them, train them, and handle the shift in their roles. Adoption decides outcomes more than features do.

If you can answer all five clearly, you're ready to evaluate tools. If you can't, the best AI investment you can make right now is in the answers.

Get ready before you buy. The AI will still be there next quarter.
