AI Agent Training: Your Bot Needs Onboarding Too
No contact center would put a new hire on the phones without training. They'd get product knowledge, policies, systems access, and time shadowing experienced agents. Then they'd be coached for months. AI agents usually get a fraction of that. Then everyone's surprised when they struggle.
AI agent training isn't a one-time setup task. It's onboarding, coaching, and performance management for a new kind of team member.
Why AI agents need onboarding
They don't know your business. A capable model knows language, not your refund policy, your exceptions, or the thing every veteran agent knows about the third-quarter billing cycle.
They learn from what you give them. Outdated articles, unclear policies, and missing edge cases become wrong answers delivered with total confidence.
They face real customers immediately. A human new hire gets a supervisor nearby and a gradual ramp. An AI agent goes live at full volume unless you design something different.
Treat your AI agent like a new hire, and it will perform like one that was trained well.
What AI agent onboarding should include
A curated knowledge foundation. The specific content the agent needs for its scope, reviewed and current, with clear guidance on what to do when the answer isn't there.
A defined job description. Which contact reasons it handles, what actions it can take, and exactly when it hands off to a person. Ambiguity here causes most early failures.
A gradual ramp. Start with a slice of traffic or a narrow set of intents. Expand as performance proves out, the same way you'd give a new agent harder calls over time.
Shadowing in reverse. Have experienced agents review its conversations early on. They'll spot the wrong tone, the missing step, and the confident mistake faster than any dashboard.
How to coach an AI agent over time
Review conversations weekly. Focus on escalations and failed resolutions. Each one is a coaching moment.
Update knowledge and instructions continuously. When policy changes, the AI's training changes the same day.
Give it a performance review. Track resolution, accuracy, escalation quality, and customer effort, then set improvement targets like you would for any team.
Your AI agent isn't a product you install. It's a teammate you develop.
